Markus Schönewolf is a freelance composer.
He studied Composition, Music Theory and Aural Training (Friedrich Jaecker, Thomas Daniel, Wolfram Breuer) as well as Piano (Pi-Hsien Chen, Michael Endres) and School Music at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (Cologne University of Music and Dance).
Performers such as Andreas Mildner (WDR), Alja Velkaverh (Gürzenich Orchestra), the Boreas Quartet Bremen, Jie Zhou, Martina Overlöper, soloists of the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra and the Trio Mallarmé play his music.
His passion is chamber music and the demanding solo repertoire. He often skilfully explores the limits of what is technically feasible. The repertoire also includes works for choir and orchestra.
His music is characterized by great lightness and emotional depth at the same time. The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger speaks of an “almost magical experience”, of an “emotional and spiritual complexity”. The modernity of his music consists of precisely this combination of emotion, spiritual penetration of the material and high virtuosity.
He is a guest at international music festivals and regularly works on large commissioned compositions.
Works for the newly developed viola campanula, a concerto for recorder and baroque ensemble as well as a song cycle for baritone and orchestra are currently being written. Collaboration with violinist Ida Bieler to prepare new works for violin.
